Oriel House
Oriel House is an early nineteenth century Georgian building, originally built as three houses for the administrating officers at the gunpowder mills by the British Board of Ordnance. The building later became the home of Sir Thomas Tobin who bought the mills in 1834 after which it was known as Oriel Court.
It took its name from the round tower attached to the east wing of the house. This feature was added by Tobin to add brightness and light into the upper room where his wife used to paint. The stables and carriage house for the building stood below the site.
Oriel House is now an expanded and modern hotel but the original house has been sympathetically restored.
