Barracks Map

Officers' Mess: Built in the late 1800s, the officers' mess was originally
a soldiers' recreation room.
The Long Valley: The so-called "long valley" was originally the stable block for cavalry horses
but later became a store for the artillery.
44 Block: The barrack square was laid out in 1810 and this barrack block was one of the earliest buildings. Renovated in 1944, it still
has a basement passage running the width of the building.
D Block: Standing on the north side of the square, this is a standard barracks block.
C Block: Now the Cork County VEC building, this was used as the NCO mess by the Irish army.
B Block: Adjoining C Block on the western side of the square, this photo shows the windows of the basement
where stores were kept.
A Block: Standing on the south side of the square, this photo shows clearly the door leading into the basement where military stores were kept.
Medics Hut:
Hospital Ruins: Only outbuildings remain of this former hospital which stood next to an open green area. (old parade area?)
Ration Stores: Standing to the right of the hospital, this building was last used as ration stores but was originally the teacher's house.
Handball Alley: This building stands behind the oratory in the foreground. Handball was a popular recreation for Irish soldiers.
The Oratory: This building in the foreground of the photo stood directly behind the present-day garda station.
Turf Shed: This large stone-built building which stood at the Main Gate was used to store turf. Now beautifully restored it stands at right angles to Main Street on the newly made Heritage Walk.
Guard Room: This building stood opposite the turf shed just inside the Main Gate. The Laurence Collection shows a Lancer standing guard at this gate.
Coach House: Now the marketing suite for O'Flynn's, the coach house was built in the 1890s. It was later used as a transport maintenance and repair shed by the Irish army.
Ruins West of Riding Area: These ruins used to stand on the site of present day Dunnes car park.
Riding Area Transport Shed: Once an indoor riding area, the Irish army used this building as a transport repair workshop.
8th FAR HQ Building: Used latterly by the 8th Field Artillery as their headquarters, the original use of this building is unknown.8th FAR HQ Building: Used latterly by the 8th Field Artillery as their headquarters, the original use of this building is unknown.
Ruins East of Oriel House: Before Oriel House became home to Thomas Tobin, one time manager of the gunpowder mills, it was home to the top administrators at the mills. These ruins were once homes to their clerks. It stands opposite the Wigwam and had extensive gardens.
Old Main Gate: The original Main Gate stood nearly opposite Mary O'Connell's pub. 
New Main Gate: When the Irish army took over the barracks in the 1940s, they made the West Gate opposite the Square into their new Main Gate.
